We Have To Be Careful Selling The Entrepreneurial Lifestyle.

I think it is time to stop selling the entrepreneurial lifestyle and focus on selling what entrepreneurs do.

Be Your Own Boss was the cover of a university magazine I recently found in my mailbox, and from my experience being my own boss my entire professional life,…this feels dangerous and shouldn’t be the success we are trying to get others to strive for, especially those entering university or the workforce.

So, if being an entrepreneur isn’t what we should be striving for, what is?

It is to do what every “successful” entrepreneur or, for that matter, working person does…contribute something meaningful to the world that is helping solve a problem and to make a living while doing it.

Now…I know that this is what the university was trying to sell because it explains it on page 3, but take it from me: being sold something like being your own boss is very seductive (that is why they do it), but the reality of it and the shame around it, if you don’t succeed, is very dangerous.

So, let’s stop selling the entrepreneurial lifestyle and start selling what entrepreneurs actually do… Contribute Meaningfully to The World.

That is the university I want my kids to go to.
